“Students understand the true meaning of sportsmanship on the senior sports day 2018”
A truly unforgettable event, the senior sports day bought with it stress, excitement, intense practice and a lot of suspense. Each house competed with the next, with the true spirit of sportsmanship. The sports day was scheduled to take place on the 27 th of February 2018.
March Past: A mesmerizing sight, it was a proud moment when students displayed discipline and order (something seen quite rarely) for this aspect of the sports day. Students were placed in orderly fashion, three lines and three students per row, which was, of course, in height order. One round of the football ground was taken and each house was given the command to start and to stop. It was quite an exhilarating experience to watch the days of practice finally bear fruit. As it was the first event of the day, the students were overflowing with energy and thus it was a tough decision to make while deciding the winners. But at the end, it is always the best that is chosen. And this privileged house happened to be PI.

Oath: Taken by all the senior students of Dubai Scholars, and vocalized by sports captain, Naqiya, it was a short yet touching experience. All the students placed a hand on the falcon emblem that their jerseys bore and stood straight and attentive as it was read out loud. At the end of the day, it is always hard work and determination that lead to one’s success, and these points were highlighted by the oath.

Lighting of the Torch: A traditional practice at Dubai Scholars, it is always inspiring to watch the committed leaders of the student body perform this prestigious activity. The lighting of the torch requires 5 members who run with the torch, each passing it to the next. It is quite like a relay race. This year, Zenden, (Sports Captain) began the run, after which the torch was passed on to Pearl,(Sports Coordinator) who gave it to Abhishek, (Deputy Head Boy) then onto Mikhaila, (Deputy Head Girl) and finally to Naqiya (Sports Captain). It was then placed on the stand in front of Naqiya.

Gymnastics: It was a wonderful display put up by the athletic members of each house. The houses jogged onto the field, in two separate lines of boys and girls each. Each house formed a human pyramid and held it up for 10 seconds. Following this, each house put up a spectacular display of a newly introduced concept called the ribbon dance, which was done by the girls of each house. Students and parents alike gazed in awe as the flexible gymnasts put up a show of their own, which consisted of a series of tedious stunts which appeared quite impossible to much of the audience. Each house did a fantastic job. However, it was OMEGA that was the best, without doubt. Their excellent coordination and fantastic skills allowed them to walk off with the final prize.

Caterpillar and Hoola Hoop races: For the Caterpillar Race, the students of each house, according to which year group they were in, held each other’s ankles while sitting in a line and dragged themselves forward to reach the finish line first. This, obviously, was done separately by the girls and boys of each grade. However, the girls of year 9-11 did something different. This was called the Hoola Hoop Race. The girls of each house held hands, while standing in a circle and passed a Hoola Hoop over themselves, and onto the next girl, without letting go of their hands. It was quite challenging, but PI managed to win it all the same. For the caterpillar race, it was ALPHA and BETA that were the fastest, and these houses took away the prize.

The next event showcased the winners of tomorrow- the Track Race. Immense speed was observed in every single race. The order was as follows; the races began with the boys followed by the girls in the increasing order of their grades; Year 7, then Year 8 followed by year 9 and after that Year 10 and then finally Year 11. The top 3 racers were chosen from the group of the 16 fastest runners from each grade. Each race was carried out with great energy and liveliness as well as true sportsmanship!
Following the running race, the 4 fastest runners from each grade for each house from both the girls and the boys were chosen for the relay race. All the houses displayed immense effort, great speed and the most important element- teamwork! Although all the houses did well, Omega house performed exceptionally as they won the relay race with their continuous effort and teamwork and, proving that they were the fastest house, they took home the trophy. |
The next event required the team strength. The tug-of- war; like all the other the other events this event proceeded according to grades- 20 students from each house for years 9-11 and 20 students per house for years 7 and 8. Omega vs beta and Alpha vs Pi was the first round and then the winners faced each other for 1st place and the houses that didn’t win would face each other for 3rd place. The house that really exceeded in this event was Alpha, as they swept off all the 3 trophies for tug- of-war and brought glory to the House. And finally, after all the team work, running, marching, pyramid building, relay running, team racing and pulling, the moment each member on the sports field was eager for finally arrived- the prize distribution!
The awards ceremony began with announcing the winners for the March past,
which was awarded to Pi house. Next Omega house was awarded for pyramid-
making and gymnastics. Then Beta house and Alpha house were rewarded for the
caterpillar race. This was followed by Omega house winning the relay race and
Alpha house winning the tug-of- war. Other than the house rewards, there was prize
distribution for the top 3 runners from each grade and the top 3 for the Medicine
Ball Throw. The house that won the house cup 2018 was Pi house mainly due to
their discipline which was maintained throughout the day. But, in the end, as said
by our sports teachers, all those who have a lively sportsman spirit are the real
winners.

‘I believe during Sports day, we learnt to overcome our weaknesses. We learnt the only way to success,
is one word: Hard work. Omega house worked especially hard to overcome their difficulties and achieve a measure of success. For this I’m extremely proud with each single member of the house for not only participating but also motivating other athletes and empowering them to reach greater heights.’ Omega house captain, Raihan Vaheed |
‘True and absolute WINNERS! Couldn’t ask for a more organized and passionate team. Well done!’
- Sara Toofail (Head girl)
The passion and conviction the students had during the sports day was fantastic! They worked together
as a team and promoted a very healthy competition. I Definity hope this continues as a tradition and
that inter house activities bring about that desired effect.’
